The dashing young man of the earlier self-portrait has gone, to be replaced by a highly focussed patriarch. By this time he was Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy, and his lectures were well received (see Valentine). Here, there is a subtle harmony of colours, even in the tints of the beard.
