This painting was probably begun in 1852 under the supervision of Holman Hunt but wasn’t exhibited at the Royal Academy until 1855. It was later shown at the Liverpool Academy in 1857, no. 179 and once belonged to the noted Pre-Raphaelite collector James Leathart.
