“Here we have a ‘working’ flooded with water, in which the men are wading knee-deep. The surveyor is taking an observation through the sights of a ‘miner’s dial.’ An assistant holds one end of the measuring chain, whilst others (not shown in the sketch) are holding their lamps at various points in the distance, for the surveyor's observations” (283).
