“The Rev. Dr. N. M. Adler, Chief Rabbi of the largest section of the Jews of England, has held office for close upon half a century. He is a native of Hanover, where he formerly officiated as Chief Rabbi, having previously held a similar office in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. An eloquent preacher and profound Hebrew scholar, he has made important contributions to the literature of his race. Ten years ago he was compelled by advancing years and failing health to relinquish the more active portions of his duties, which were delegated to his son, the Rev. Dr. Hermann Adler, then and still minister of the Bayswater Synagogue” (604).
