Richard Westmacott, Jr (1799-1872)

Signed and dated 1836

Plaster relief

Cast from the relief commissioned by the Earl of Ellsemere which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1836.

There has been some confusion here. Information from the catalogue cited below assigns this work to Richard Westmacott but it is described as his son's in the Art Journal of 1849, where it is praised for its "flowing wavy grace" (qtd. in Sullivan). It is also mentioned in one of his obituaries in 1872, along with Paolo and Franscesca, as being among "his more purely ideal works" ("Death of Professor Westmacott"). [JB]
