View of the Hodshrove Skew-Bridge, on the road from Brighton to Lewes.

The bridge was built to carry the railway track of the South Coast Railway from Brighton across the turnpike here into the nearby town of Lewes. The whole line was constructed in ten months and completed in 1846, to the design of the engineer John Urpeth Rastrick (1780-1856). The Hodshrove Bridge looks a little different now from when it was first opened (see the Illustrated London News report of the opening of the line). One arch has been reinforced with a supporting structure below the top, and another one has been bricked up.
