St Mary Church

St Mary's

Sir George Gilbert Scott

1843

Wimbledon, London

This is an early work by Scott, who was then still part of the firm "Messrs Scott ands Moffat." Scott greatly extended the older greystock brick church on the site, changing the windows to the perpendicular form, giving it a striking tower and soaring spire, and cladding the walls with knapped flint for uniformity. The spire is a 196' tall. The church is beautifully situated at the edge of Wimbledon Park, about a ten-minutes' walk from the Wimbledon and All England Lawn Tennis Club. Inside, there is a memorial plaque to Sir Joseph Bazalgette, whose solidly impressive family mausoleum is at the east end of the graveyard
