Beardsley and Burne-Jones

Mary Beth McGrath '91 (English 264, 1991)

Burne-Jones, by this time one of the most famous artists in England, usually let visitors into his studio on Sunday afternoons; though by 1891 had discontinued the practice. Not knowing this, Beardsley set out to West Kensington with his sister to pay homage one Sunday in July. They were admitted nonetheless, and Beardsley managed to show Burne-Jones his portfolio. Impressed, Burne-Jones recommended him to the Westminster School of Art, thus confirming Beardsley's instincts that he should become an artist.

Burne-Jones' influence is obvious in the drawings of this period: a wispy, two-dimensional medieval style that soon gave way to Whistler's oriental influences.
