A desperate Maggie finds the strength to strike out by boat to summon Tom from Dorlcote mill, which is already partially engulfed in water — thus initiating the final reunion with her previously censorious brother. Soon, bulky fragments of machinery loosed from a wharf will bear down on them both, consigning them together to a watery grave.
