Reframing the Pre-Raphaelites Under the Orientalist Lens. Lecture to be given by Sheri Schrader. Lecture starts at 11am (GMT). THIS LECTURE WILL BE DELIVERED VIA ZOOM.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood often recalls the fantastic, medieval themes used by the artists or a dialogue of their personal lives. The presentation aims to allow the re-evaluation of William Holman Hunt, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris and Ford Madox Brown through the lens of Orientalism. Using the definitions of Orientalism by Edward Said and later refined by Linda Nochlin, three words, one by each artist. These elements will focus on themes of religion, exoticism and Islamic textile work. Each artist takes a different path in their art by participating in the discourse in an overt, latent, or appreciation of Eastern art methods.

Sheri Michelle Allen Schrader graduated with an MA in Art History from the University of Houston in 2021. Currently, she is the Interim Group tour and Ticket Coordinator and Guest Services Team Leader at the Museum of Fine Art Houston. She researches as an independent scholar and is a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Podcast of the Pre-Raphaelite Society. Her research focuses on re-evaluating the Pre-Raphaelites within the framework of Orientalist theory. She loves reading, needle craft, and spending time with friends and family in her spare time.

Wightwick Manor and the 13 (+1) Women Artists Who Shape its Stories.. Lecture to be given by Hannah Squire. Lecture starts at 11am in the John Peek Room at The Birmingham and Midland Institute (9 Margaret Street, Birmingham B3 3BS). THIS IS AN IN-PERSON LECTURE.

With more artworks created by professional female artists in its collection than the National Gallery, London, and a collection mostly acquired by the Mander family after the house and its contents (with a healthy endowment) was given to the National Trust in 1937. These artworks were acquired specifically, and rather uniquely at the time, to be exhibited to the public by art historian and writer Rosalie Mander and her husband Sir Geoffrey Mander in this Wolverhampton Museum and their home. As well as the delightful oil paintings, the collection also features watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks, embroideries, letters and books. The Manor is teeming with womens artistic and poetical genius, and now also boasts a gallery space dedicated to the art of Evelyn and William De Morgan.

This talk will explore the creations of women from Marie Stillman Spartali to May Morris, Elizabeth Siddal to Lucy Madox Brown and the lesser-known Winifred Spencer Stanhope and Flora MacDonald Reid, among all the others - including a potential Christina Rossettii painting - Is it? Isn't it?

Hanna Squire, BA, MA, MRes (University of Birmingham), is an Art and Literature historian, researcher, writer and freelance curator.
