  • Interestingly, the base of the monument has Clyde's birthdate, 1792, but no year following "died" (Clyde died in 1863). "As commander-in-chief in India he brought the the Indian Mutiny to an end in 1858" (Bullus and Asprey 235). Cf. John Henry Foley's statue of him in Glasgow's George Square, which was unveiled in the following year.
