Cloth binding for ‘Taith y Pererin’

[1863]

Maroon cloth gilt

10 x 7 inches

Translated as ‘The Journey of a Pilgrim,’ this Welsh version reprints J. D. Watson’s illustrations from the Routledge edition of 1861, but binds it in a new, anonymous cover. The artist modified one of the Dawson’s designs to create the central panel, which is enclosed in a Gothic mandorla. Published by the small house of R, Hughes in Wrexham, it shows how easily even minor publishers could procure spectacular cloth binding designs for their books.
