Cloth binding for ‘The Yellow Book,’ 9

1896

Yellow cloth with heavy blocking

8¼ x 6½ inches

This issue is given over to the Birmingham School of Art, showcasing outstanding illustrations by Evelyn Holden, Celia Levetus, Mary Newill and a number of other developing talents of the period. The emphasis is on female contributors and it is appropriate that the cover is by a woman too. It is nevertheless one of the weaker designs – despite its Art Nouveau line and reiteration of the butterfly motif associated with Aestheticism.
