‘The Eglinton Tournament’ (plate 4), 1840. A lithographic print, drawn by Doyle directly onto the stone. 10¼ x 14½ inches. This is an image of the Melee – when participants tried to recreate the effect of a medieval skirmish. The result was the usual travesty, and Doyle exaggerates the disorder for comic effect.
