‘The Eglinton Tournament’ (plate 6), 1840. A lithographic print, drawn by Doyle directly onto the stone. 10¼ x 14½ inches. The presentation of a champion to the Queen of Beauty: it should be a glamorous scene, but in Doyle’s hands it becomes a comic-strip absurdity, replete with caricatured faces and sly comedic detail – note especially the row of hands and noses positioned on the banister leading up to the Queen, which recreates the effect of naughty boys peering into a sweet shop window.
