‘Gathering Berries,’ 1874. Wood engraving drawn by Homer and engraved at Harper’s New York premises. 9 1/8 x 13½ inches. Harper’s Weekly, XVIII (July 11, 1874): 584. One of Homer’s lyrical visions of America, with middle-class children and young girls foraging for berries. Typically, the scene is animated by wind which blows the girls’ ribbons. The composition gives the impression of informality, with the figures turned or turning away from the viewer.
