‘The War for the Union – Bayonet Charge,’ 1862. Wood engraving drawn by Homer and engraved at Harper’s premises. 13 5/8 x 20 5/8 inches. Harper’s Weekly, XIII (July 12, 1862): 424 –425. While it is not clear as to the specific engagement shown here, Homer encapsulates the character of the many minor skirmishes in the war. These are shown as terrifying encounters that seem the behaviour of madmen, driven forward by violence.
