Contemporary dark brown full morocco, spine elaborately gilt in compartments, boards with large raised semicircular pieces to each corner, to which detailed and elaborate floral patterning in relief against a gauffred gilt field, boards decorated with gilt and blind rules, gilt-stamped geometric and floral designs, with titles in relief on a gauffred gilt scroll design, Moses among the reeds illustration gilt-stamped within a crenelated gilt border, all edges gilt, generous turn-ins, watered-silk endpapers, the whole held together by a gilt clasp. Black and white Doré frontispiece, two title pages and three plates for births, deaths and marriages decorated in colour and gilt, numerous black and white illustrated plates and vignettes in the text, many by Doré.
