This finished piece is described on the Arts and Crafts Hammersmith site as having "horizontally scrolling foliage with buds and small flower-heads on a mid-blue ground." The flowers and leaves suggest that these are poppies. A likely explanation of the title is given on the Hammersmith site as well — that the design was "made for the school of the same name in North Devon, which was attended from 1878 by the young Rudyard Kipling (Edward Burne-Jones’s nephew)." The little label attached to the lower left-hand corner identifies te piece simply as an "oblong mat." — Jacqueline Banerjee.
