The Land Ironclads, 1903. Photomechanical reproduction of a pen and ink drawing. The Strand 26 (July – December 1903), 755. Shepperson’s image closely accords with Wells’s description of the Ironclads as beetle-like. His inclusion of details on the vehicles’ hulls adds to the sense of reality, but the blank landscape seems to reinforce the notion of their being like scurrying animals milling around on the ground.
