Two Cupids with Ribbon: Thoughts on Angels, by Lucy Brightwell (1811-1875). © The Trustees of the British Museum. Height: 81 millimetres x Width: 103 millimetres. According to the museum site, on which this appears as Asset no. 972273001, this is an "impression pasted onto backing sheet.... etching [acquired in] 1902." But the date of the original work is unknown. The museum also holds another similar one, reversed, but minus the lettering on the ribbon. The composition with its skilful hatching succeeds in giving a feeling of action and interaction, although it is not as finely detailed as Brightwell's copies of Rembrandt and others. Possibly it is an experiment for a title page decoration. — Jacqueline Banerjee
