Memorial to John and Charles Spearing, by Edward Hodges Baily (1788-1867)
Spearing Memorial Spearing Memorial

Memorial to John and Charles Spearing by Edward Hodges Baily (1768-1867). c. 1831. Marble: a rather conventional neoclassical memorial tablet showing a female figure leaning on the pedestal of an urn. The memorial is at St Mary's, the parish church of Potterne in Wiltshire. It is hard to read the inscription, but John gets the lion's share of it, and his part ends with the information that the memorial was raised by "his tenants and (?) dependents." At the side of the base is the inscription “E. H. Baily, R.A./ Sculp. London 1843” [Click here for an image of it; click on the other images on this page to enlarge them.]
