War Memorial. Albert Toft (1862-1949). Designed 1921; unveiled 1922. Bronze figure; stone plinth. Garden of Rememberance, Streatham Common North, London SW16. [Click on images to enlarge them.]

Toft's contemplative infantryman, head bowed in mourning for fallen comrades, and hands resting on his downturned rifle, is particularly moving. The same statue appears on several other war memorials — at Stone in Staffordshire, Leamington in Warwickshire, and Thornton Cleveleys in Lancashire (Bloice 6).
