Arthur Boyd Houghton

1874

Wood engraving by the Dalziel Brothers

6 ¼ x 4 ¾ inches

Illustration for Picture Posies, 103.

This is an illustration for a poem by Thomas Hood. The image celebrates young love, creating a parallel between the spring and the vitality of the married couple’s affection for each other. The analogy of love and a generative nature also points to their sexuality and the imperative to procreate.
