"Life and Thought have gone away / Side by side" by William Mulready, RA, engraved by the Dalziels, 1857. Wood engraving, 8 x 9.5 cm. An illustration to "The Deserted House," originally in The Moxon Tennyson. Source: 1898 Complete Poetical Works, p. 19. Text beneath the plate:

                    THE DESERTED HOUSE

            I.

Life and Thought have gone away
      Side by side,
      Leaving door and windows wide:
Careless tenants they!

            II.

All within is dark as night:
In the windows is no light;
And no murmur at the door,
So frequent on its hinge before.
