Good Samaritans

Good Samaritans

Frederick Walker

Wood engraving by Joseph Swain

7 x 4¼ inches

W. M. Thackeray,Philip, serialized in The Cornhill Magazine, 4 (July 1861): facing 1.

A typical scene which reveals Walker’s emphasis on close-knit domestic groups, significant gazing and highly-nuanced gestures. Philip’s uncertainty, toying with his hat and looking vacantly in front of him, is consistently shown throughout the series; Pen looks on worriedly and the children try to cheer him up.
