Exterior view of entrance to Brompton Cemetery from the Old Brompton Road, London, through the North Lodge. Architect: Benjamin Baud (1807-1875). Consecrated 1840. Pleasantly mellow Bath stone. The cemetery is entered here through a sort of triumphal arch — or the great west entrance of a huge outdoor cathedral (see Brompton Cemetery). Speaking generally about the Victorian cemetery, Sarah Rutherford writes, "The gateway was a key feature heralding the entrance to Elysium, which also happened to be a prestigious place of commemoration" (21).
