Our country has had no painter more genuinely a painter, for F. B. paints in all materials — pastel, etching, lithography, charcoal, chalk. Seldom does he draw a line which has not the quality of a painted stroke informed with his inborn dislike for linear assertion. There is some danger here, ot course, a passion for linear probity being a fine discipline. In his best work he knows when to stop; and often he stops at a point which a great many onlookers find "unfinished," or "too sketchy." — Walter Shaw Sparrow
