Au Bord de l'Eau, Effet du Matin (The Water’s Edge – Morning)). Etching in black ink with plate tone on off-white paper; 13 ⅝x 16 inches (34.5 x 40.5 cm) – sheet size. Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession no. CAI.827.

There is only one state of this print. In this etching morning light can be seen streaming through the trees bordering the water’s edge. Legros’s use of chiaroscuro, with the marked contrast between light and shade, is particularly effective in this work. The atmospheric effect is aided by the extensive use of plate tone. — Dennis T.
