An Awkward Passage is a sample of what is occasionally to be met with, by the side of a ‘fault’ for instance. The material here is not coal, but shale, or other stone found in the coal measure. The way is most difficult to keep open, and falls of the roof frequently occur. It is used only by the firemen or officials of the mine, and should be abandoned even by them as soon as an alternative cutting can he made. ” (283)
