On 6 November 1802, John Cole Steele who kept a lavender warehouse in Catherine Street, Strand, was murdered and robbed. Owen Haggerty and John Holloway were arrested in 1806 following the confession of Benjamin Hanfield who claimed to have been one of the men responsible for Steele's murder. Hanway turned King's Evidence; Haggerty and Holloway were taken to trial on 9 February 1807, they were convicted and subsequently hanged on 22 February 1807. The crowd that attended the public hanging was so great that over a hundred were either killed or injured in the crush.
