Figures from History and Literature (1)

Figures from History and Literature (3) by Nathaniel Hitch. Location: South wall of the Great Hall, Two Temple Place, Victoria Embankment, London EC3. Architect: John Loughborough Pearson. [Click on photograph to enlarge it]

The figures depicted: Left to right: (a) Voltaire (François Marie Arouet, 1694-1778) (b) Queen Henrietta Marie (1609-69), the widow of Charles I — another unhappy woman. (c) Macchiavelli (1469-1527), author of The Prince. Hitch has placed the unfortunate queen of England between two authors reknowned for their cynicism. The conversion of the earlier author's name into the adjective Macchiavellian says it all.
