Maud Gonne is described here as an "English political activist, suffragist, and actress." Although her mother was English, and she was born in Surrey, Maud Gonne was a passionate supporter of Irish nationalism. W. B. Yeats's fell passionately in love with her but she rejected him, nevertheless remaining his long-time muse. She eventually married Major John MacBride, a nationalist who was executed after the Easter Rising of April 1916.
